A Useful Checklist for Winter Motoring

Driving in winter weather is stressful and never easy, but a few simple tips can make it less stressful.

You should firstly make sure that your vehicle is ready for the winter by checking all of the important elements for winter driving such as the tire, the battery, the oil, radiator and the lights.

Secondly make sure you have all the equipment you might possibly need in the trunk of the car. This would include a shovel, a torch and batteries, jump leads, food and water, a warning triangle, a tow rope and a blanket.

Check the weather forecast before you leave and tell someone where you are going. Make sure your cell phone is charged and have a charger in the car.

When driving, drive more slowly than usual and avoid all distractions such as loud music. Turn your cell phone off while driving as well.

Don’t pass sanding trucks and snow plows as the road in front of them will be worse than behind, but make sure you stay well back from them to avoid your windscreen becoming covered with salt and sand.

If you do get stuck in the snow, do not spin your wheels as this will make it worse but turn them from side to side to move some snow out of the way and then gently press on the accelerator. If this does not work then use a shovel to move the snow and put sand or salt under the wheel to help you drive out.

How to Put Out a Grease Fire

Everyone cooks with cooking oil or fat at some time. But if the oil overheats and catches fire you need to be aware of what to do.

The most important measure is never to leave oil or fat on the stove without supervision, as once it heats up and passes the smoking stage, it will catch on fire automatically.

If that happens the first thing to do is to turn off the heat. Do not try and carry the pan out of the kitchen as you may very well splash yourself with burning oil or tip the pan and the fire will spread. Fire needs oxygen to burn so cut off the oxygen supply by putting a heavy metal lid on the pan. Do not use a glass lid, as that will likely shatter. Another way to put out a grease fire is to use baking soda, but you will need a large quantity and not simply a sprinkle.

If you have a fire extinguisher you can use that, but it will need to be a Class B Chemical Extinguisher and it may contaminate your kitchen. However it is better than having the fire rage out of control. If the fire does get out of control, then get out of the kitchen and call 911 for the Fire Brigade.

Was it Deliberate?

According to Greenville police on Wednesday, the driver of the car that hit a pedestrian remains in jail on a charge of felonious assault.

A male pedestrian, 37 year old Ben Jones, was hit by a car on East Fourth Street, in what Greenville police are investigating as a possible domestic dispute, and was taken to a Miami Valley Hospital with leg injuries, and the driver who hit him was taken to jail after being taken to Wayne Healthcare.

James Edward Stewart, 35, is in the Darke County Jail on no bond and is awaiting a court date for arraignment, whilst there is no news on the condition of Ben Jones.

Police say they have determined through their investigation that Stewart deliberately, and with the intention of causing serious bodily harm, struck the victim. Greenville police said that he was speeding when he ran a stop sign at Locust and Fourth, hit Jones and smashed into a parked car.

An accident reconstruction team was called to the scene.
