Iva Man Dies in Auto Accident

There was a two vehicle accident on Augusta Road which resulted in the death of an Iva man on Thursday afternoon.

Lance Cpl. David Jones, of the Highway Patrol, said that the accident happened at the intersection of Augusta Road, U.S. Highway 25, and Garrison Road in Pelzer. It involved a 1991 Honda driven by David Scott Flowers and a 1997 Chevy pickup truck driven by a 46 year old Easley man. It appears that the pickup truck drove into the back of the Honda

Park Evans, Greenville County Coroner, said that Flowers, 41, of Gerdie Simpson Road had to be extricated from the vehicle and died about 30 minutes after the 1:20 p.m. accident at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He went on to say that the cause of death is pending but that Flowers was wearing a seat belt.

Mystery Driver Sought in Connection with Truck Accident

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still trying to identify the driver of a pickup that struck a bus, hit a building, and left the scene.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday near Norwood Drive in Anderson County.

The truck was driving south on S.C. 153 when the pickup driver lost control and sideswiped a Greenlink bus, the Tiger Commute, which is owned by the city of Greenville.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the accident and the bus driver, 69-year-old Edward Iwanski of Greenville, was not injured.

The truck then crossed a median, struck a guardrail and went down an embankment and hit a building which was home to Fulbright Mini Storage and an accounting office.

A witness to the crash said the truck left with cinder blocks on it and scattered pieces of bricks and cinder blocks on the road the driver took after the crash.

The damaged red truck was later found parked at a home on Old Easley Bridge Road, about two and a half miles from the crash.

The truck is registered to David Bayne, aged over 80, but he was not driving it at the time of the accident.

Fire Chief Wins Award

Easley fire chief Butch Womack has been awarded Fire Chief of the year from the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs.

According to Alan Sims, chief of the Belton Fire Department and executive director of the fire chief association, Womack does an excellent job for the community.

Womack originally did not think of working in public service but when he was 16, in 1974 he worked part time as a dispatcher with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.

He then stepped up his volunteering after his marriage which led to a full-time job with the Easley Police Department, and then he looked into becoming a volunteer firefighter. Womack recalls he applied on a Monday and on the following Tuesday he received a call back to come on as a full-time firefighter. Womack has won widespread recognition for his work. Since he was appointed chief in 1993, he has received state and national awards, and he has served as president of both the S.C. State Association of Fire Chiefs and as president of the South Carolina Firefighters Association.

Teens Die in Car Wreck

Early Wednesday morning, in front of Riverside Middle School on Hammett Bridge Road, firefighters were called to a car fire.

Bystanders helped the driver and rear seat passenger out of the car, but the front seat passenger was trapped inside and died. The driver was taken to hospital where he unfortunately died and the third person was flown to the August Burn Center in Georgia.

The driver was Andrew Chase Jackson, aged 16 and from Greer. Lt. Jim Holcombe from Greer police said that he did not have a driver’s license or a learner’s permit.

The passenger who died was sitting in the front seat and died of blunt force trauma to the chest. He was 17 year old Aaron Jeffrey Al-Rawi Jones, of Taylors.

Holcombe said the car was not reported stolen and they estimate was travelling at between 70 and 80 mph in a 35 mph area.

Drugged driving by teens increasing

Drugged Driving

It has been discovered that the numbers of teens and young people who are driving whilst high on marijuana is increasing.

Columbia University researchers, having carried out a study on the subject, have unearthed the fact that fatal accidents involving drugged drivers have actually tripled over the last decade.

In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration undertook a recent survey and asked High School seniors if they had ever driven whilst high on marijuana. A staggering one in eight admitted that yes, they had driven after smoking the drug.

What is more, young drivers are also at risk with 25% of the fatal drugged driver accidents, involving drivers under the age of 25.

Unfortunately, it does not appear that there is an easy solution to the problem on the horizon, as more and more states appear to be looking to legalize the drug. Parents and grandparents are expressing their concern at the research findings from both institutions saying that supervision of these young high drivers is becoming increasingly difficult.
