Easley fire chief Butch Womack has been awarded Fire Chief of the year from the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs.
According to Alan Sims, chief of the Belton Fire Department and executive director of the fire chief association, Womack does an excellent job for the community.
Womack originally did not think of working in public service but when he was 16, in 1974 he worked part time as a dispatcher with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office.
He then stepped up his volunteering after his marriage which led to a full-time job with the Easley Police Department, and then he looked into becoming a volunteer firefighter. Womack recalls he applied on a Monday and on the following Tuesday he received a call back to come on as a full-time firefighter. Womack has won widespread recognition for his work. Since he was appointed chief in 1993, he has received state and national awards, and he has served as president of both the S.C. State Association of Fire Chiefs and as president of the South Carolina Firefighters Association.
