GM has made the announcement this week that it will be issuing yet another recall, this time of more than 3 million defective vehicles around the world. This comes on the heels of a similar recall that was issued in February of this year of more than 2.5 million vehicles. The problem that prompted both recalls stems from a defective ignition switch that causes the engines of the vehicles to shut off while the car is being driven and for air bags to deactivate.
The initial recall in February came after more than 10 years of consumer complaints about the defective switches. The problem is believed to have caused at least 13 deaths and several serious injuries resulting from more than 50 crashes directly related to the issue. A House subcommittee investigating the defect will pose questions to GM chief executive Mary Barra, the bulk of which will be centered around the company’s plans for addressing its myriad safety issues.
