GM Recalls Million More of its Vehicles

GM has made the announcement this week that it will be issuing yet another recall, this time of more than 3 million defective vehicles around the world. This comes on the heels of a similar recall that was issued in February of this year of more than 2.5 million vehicles. The problem that prompted both recalls stems from a defective ignition switch that causes the engines of the vehicles to shut off while the car is being driven and for air bags to deactivate.

The initial recall in February came after more than 10 years of consumer complaints about the defective switches. The problem is believed to have caused at least 13 deaths and several serious injuries resulting from more than 50 crashes directly related to the issue. A House subcommittee investigating the defect will pose questions to GM chief executive Mary Barra, the bulk of which will be centered around the company’s plans for addressing its myriad safety issues.

Car Accidents Involving Teenage Drivers Increase During the Summer

With school out for the summer in the vast majority of school districts across the United States, high schoolers are out on the roads in records numbers. With this increase in teen drivers on Americas roads comes an increase in the number of car accidents and consequently the number of resulting injuries and deaths. Car accidents have long been the leading cause of death among teens regardless of the time of year but that fact is amplified during the summer months.

In recent years teenagers have become the number one culprit of accidents caused by texting while driving. This epidemic has become so widespread in the US that it has spurned several national ad campaigns warning teens about the dangers of being distracted by texts when they are behind the wheel. With people out and about in higher numbers during the summer months, the danger only increases.

Parents are strongly advised to talk to their teens about these dangers and to tell them to be extra cautious when driving during the summer. Children in particular are outdoors more during the summer season and that is one of many reasons teenagers need to maintain focus on the road when driving during the long mid-year break.

Avoid Distracted Driving in Asheville

One of the most persistent dangers on Asheville roads is the threat posed by distracted drivers. According to published studies, distracted drivers may be every bit as dangerous to themselves and the drivers around them as drivers who are intoxicated. Many drivers feel that, because they control their distractions and their levels of distraction, they can stop being distracted at any time and refocus on the road. Sadly, many distracted drivers find out the hard way that this attitude is not conducive to driving safely. One of the most dangerous of all driver distractions is cell phone use. But, Asheville area drivers engage in many other distracting activities including:

  • Eating
  • Drinking
  • Reading
  • Interacting with children
  • Talking on the phone
  • Texting
  • Rubbernecking
  • Day training
  • Road rage

In recent years authorities have initiated numerous public service campaigns aimed at raising awareness among the population of the dangers involved with distracted driving. We would like to encourage all Asheville drivers to think of not only themselves, but also other drivers, and pay attention to the roads while behind the wheel. Remember, whatever you would prefer to be doing instead of driving can wait. When behind the wheel, operating your motor vehicle in the safest possible manner must be your number one concern.

Tire Blowout – The Dangers Posed by Recalled and Defective Tires

Recent investigations by ABC News and its affiliates have found that there may be startling numbers of defective tires on roadways across the United States. According to the reports, over five million tires have been recalled in the country since the year 2000, and approximately four million of those tires may still be in use on the nation’s roads. This disturbing assertion comes in the wake of additional information which suggests that within six years of manufacture, tires begin to disintegrate, whether they have been used or not.

We recommend that you check your tires for the manufacture date in an effort to help determine whether or not they are safe to continue using. Additionally, it is a good idea to check your tires to see if they have been part of a recall. Some may believe that having acquired their tires from national retailers, such as Sam’s Club, means that the tires are safe. In fact, several national tire sellers have been sued for selling recalled tires, and servicing recalled tires but failing to inform the cars’ owners of the dangers.

The most serious danger posed by a defective tire is that it will literally disintegrate while you drive. This situation has happened to numerous owners of defective recalled tires, with serious injury and death sometimes being the result. As such, it is highly recommended that, in the case you suffer a tire blowout, you keep the tire and check it against national recall registries.
